More than 170 milu deer have been observed in a wetland of southern Dongting Lake in Yuanjiang, Hunan province, marking the largest concentration ever recorded in the area and indicating a significant recovery of the local ecosystem.
The deer were spotted in the Yuanjiang section of South Dongting Lake Nature Reserve. For years, sightings of milu deer in this area typically involved no more than 30 animals, mostly scattered individuals, Zhang Yong, head of the science and education department of the reserve's Yuanjiang administration, explained.
The latest count represents a dramatic increase, Zhang noted.
