At his solo exhibition The Other Side of Painting, Wen Wu is displaying 20-odd oil paintings that look into the certainty and uncertainty of painting.

He was inspired by the cutting machine, which he saw as a forceful power to eliminate individualistic features of things. He applied thick layers of oil paints to create sculptural images.

He then used a self-made cutting machine to slice the painting vertically and horizontally, which deformed the images while at the same time created new images.

Wen Wu’s artworks are on show at the Whitebox Art Center inside Beijing’s 798 Art District until March 5.
