Five people were killed and one injured after a collapse at an illegally operated mining site in Yunnan province early Saturday morning, according to Xinhua News Agency.

The accident occurred at around 4:30 am in Baiwu village, Nagu township, Huize county, local authorities said.

Emergency response teams from Qujing city and Huize county — including personnel from emergency management, public security, fire and rescue, health, and natural resources departments — responded to the scene after receiving reports of the accident.

Six trapped individuals were recovered and sent to hospital for treatment. Five later died from severe injuries despite rescue efforts, while the remaining survivor is in stable condition and not in life-threatening danger.

The management of the aftermath, as well as an investigation into the cause of the accident, are underway, according to authorities.
