Tianjin surgeon impresses foreign delegation with 40-minute procedure
Under the observation of a visiting delegation of orthopedic surgeons from Malaysia, Jordan, and Armenia, Cao Jiangang, director of the Department of Sports Injuries and Arthroscopy at Tianjin Hospital, performed an arthroscopic suture repair for a massive rotator cuff tear in just 40 minutes.
A doctor from Jordan noted that a similar procedure in his country would typically take more than three hours. Qutibeh Abdelqader Ahmed Darwish, a member of the Jordan Sports Medicine Federation and medical supervisor for the national team, attributed the efficiency to team coordination and advanced instruments.
"The procedure was not only fast but also delivered an excellent outcome with a high success rate," he said, adding that the techniques used are on par with leading international standards.
Johan Ahmad, a consultant orthopedic surgeon from KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital in Malaysia, highlighted the hospital's detailed preoperative planning. He noted that multidisciplinary teams work closely using clinical assessments and imaging to precisely identify lesions, with contingency plans in place for unexpected situations.
He said he plans to send doctors to Tianjin for further training.
Xu Weiguo, Party secretary of Tianjin Hospital, said the institution welcomes international exchanges and aims to share advanced techniques and China's prevention-oriented approach to sports rehabilitation and its public healthcare system.
