Major General Feng Yufang, a renowned expert of ballistic missile warheads with the People's Liberation Army Rocket Force, died of disease on Monday. He was 63.

A native of Yuyao, Zhejiang province, Feng was born in January 1963 and studied at local schools until September 1983 when he was admitted to the National University of Defense Technology in Changsha, Hunan province, to study nuclear radiation and protective measures.

In July 1987, he graduated with a bachelor's degree and was assigned to a research institute of the PLA Second Artillery Corps, predecessor of the PLA Rocket Force.

There, he worked and moved up through the ranks, specializing in technologies and tactics related to nuclear and conventional warheads of ballistic missiles.

In late 2003, he was transferred to another institute under the then-PLA Second Artillery Corps Equipment Research Academy and worked there until the end of 2014, when he was named a senior engineer at the academy's experimentation center.

In the summer of 2006, the researcher was promoted to the rank of major general and was later named head of a high-level expert group for missile warhead.

In 2008, Feng received a doctor's degree from the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, a major developer of carrier rockets and ballistic missiles.

In 2017, he was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

During his service, Feng was conferred with multiple honorary titles and national sci-tech awards due to his significant contribution to the development and deployment of advanced nuclear and conventional warheads.

In addition to his research job, the warhead specialist was a member of a top-level advisory council to offer advice for nuclear arms control. He was also a member of the 13th and 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
