As part of its efforts to modernize its farming and rural areas, agricultural powerhouse Shandong province is doubling down on efforts to develop a modern and resilient grain production base.

Over the past five years, the province has consistently produced more than 55 million metric tons of grain annually. Vegetables, meat, eggs, milk, fruits, and seafood have all registered steady growth on a high baseline, according to a policy briefing held on Monday.

The province aims to develop around 4.5 million mu (300,000 hectares) of fields that can produce 1.5 tons of grain per mu within this year, while maintaining stable grain farms and boosting per-unit yields.

Efforts will focus on high-yield crop varieties, farmland quality improvement, farm equipment innovation, and smart farming technologies, including AI and big data applications, said Zhou Tuanjie, deputy director of the Shandong Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Marine fisheries and saline-alkali land utilization are also areas of development.

The province's total agricultural, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery output value has surpassed 1.3 trillion yuan, with the sector's added value reaching 677.5 billion yuan in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 4 percent.
