Influenza remains at a high level of prevalence in China while positive test rates of the virus trended up during the first week of this month, according to an online report published by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday. Most provinces in China's northeastern, central, and northwestern parts have seen decrease of influenza activity, while several provinces in the nation's eastern, southern, and southwestern parts still see increasing influenza activity, according to the report. Influenza outbreaks at schools are also on a downward trend.

The center reminded the nation that it has seen a high-occurrence season for respiratory infectious disease with influenza remaining at a high level of prevalence, thus childcare institutes, schools, and elderly nursing homes should monitor people's health conditions closely and take prompt measures to reduce impacts brought on by cluster outbreaks.

The center also suggested people aged above 6-months without contraindications to take influenza vaccines, especially those with high risks of contracting influenza — including medical workers, elderly aged 60 and above, preschool students, and students at primary and secondary schools, and patients with chronic diseases.

People, especially the elderly and patients with chronic diseases, are suggested to wear masks at hospitals, crowded places, or public transportation vehicles such as flights and trains to reduce risks of infection.

Also, the center reminded people to keep good sanitation habits and live healthy lifestyles with balanced diet, exercise, and rests. It's necessary to wear masks if having symptoms like fever or coughing and seek prompt treatment at the hospital.
