BELGRADE -- The expanding cloud of volcanic dust, which has played havoc with air travel in Western Europe, drifted over the Balkans leading to the closure of air space over Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and most of Croatia on Saturday afternoon, reported the Serbian news agency Tanjug.

According to the Air Traffic Control Center of Serbia and Montenegro, the Belgrade international airport "Nikola Tesla" was in operation in the morning, receiving flights from cities to the south. However, Bruno Genal, director of the flight control at "Nikola Tesla", announced a complete flight ban by 4:00 p.m. after several partial closures of air space during the day.

In Croatia, with the exception of the airports in the southern Adriatic coastal towns of Split and Dubrovnik, air space has also been closed, reported the Croatian news agency Hina.
