Jade deer (Western Zhou Dynasty)

This deer, 8.3 cm tall and 5.9 cm wide, was unearthed in the village of Beizhao, from Tomb No 63 at the Jin site in Western Zhou Dynasty (c.16th century-771 BC), in 1993. The eyes are round and ears big and it is holding its head high as if building its strength for a quick getaway. The chest is straight and back arched, as if it was unsure whether to advance or flee. The carving is somewhat exaggerated but very expressive, highlighting the bearing and characteristic traits of the deer.
