A laid-off worker in Beijing recently discovered his new pursuit of carving eggs has become an art form.

Fifty-four-year-old Dou Baoguang was a root-carving fanatic when he was young. He wanted to pick up his old hobby after feeling upset about being laid-off back in June, but found it much easier to find eggs in the city than tree roots.

During the past two months, Dou has finished over 70 carved eggs, each with cutouts of animals, boats, traditional Chinese characters, and so on.

He uses a pencil to draw out the pattern on a raw egg, before using his small knife to carve the pattern and let all the eggs yolk flow out.

Dou says he and his family will later not waste any egg by using the yolk to cook meals.

His daughter is very supportive and often helps along with fresh ideas, while his wife has accepted facing eggs at every meal.
