Typhoon Nida hits quake-stricken area in South China

(Xinhua) Updated: 2016-08-04 12:42
NANNING -- Now classified as a weakening cyclone, typhoon Nida on Tuesday afternoon, brought further misery to part of South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region struck by an earthquake at the weekend.

By 1:00 pm Wednesday, heavy rain brought by Nida has forced the relocation of 3,571 people throughout the region. Authorities in Wuzhou and Hezhou cities have arranged for patrols around 125 reservoirs.

In Cangwu County, where a 5.4-magnitude earthquake damaged houses on Sunday afternoon, nearly 3,000 villagers were relocated before Nida hit.

The local civil affairs department has sent quilts and supplies to those sheltering in a local primary school.

The county remained on high alert as the earthquake caused cracks in buildings and damaged roads, while the typhoon has brought risks of secondary disasters, said Lin Shufeng, the party secretary of the county.

Heavy rain is still expected to continue in the region, according to the regional flood control headquarters.
