LHASA -- Traffic on the Chengdu-Lhasa highway, a key road linking the interior areas of China and Tibet, was halted after part of the road was buried by a mountain collapse at 9:30 am Tuesday.

No fatalities were reported, but more than 50 vehicles were stranded when 30m of road was blocked, said Chen Jun, chief of the No. 4 traffic detachment with the armed police.

According to Chen, the collapse occurred about 130 km from Bayi Town in Nyingchi Prefecture, southeastern Tibet.

He said a long period of rain contributed to the collapse.

Soldiers with the No. 4 traffic detachment were sent to clear the road, and Chen said traffic might resume by 8 pm Tuesday.
