Chinese Academy of Engineering academician Jiang Huancheng reflected on Shanghai's evolving approach to urban construction, noting a shift from prioritizing speed and scale toward emphasizing quality, sustainability and accessibility in housing development.

Michael King from Building Design Partnership praised Shanghai's waterfront renovations for preserving industrial heritage while creating accessible public spaces. He emphasized the historical role that rivers play as drivers of urban civilization, noting how both the Thames and Huangpu River have shaped their cities' development as global trade centers.

During a roundtable discussion, participants examined the functional evolution, spatial governance, cultural value, and future vision of both mother rivers. They agreed that future waterfront developments should serve multiple functions beyond ecological restoration, becoming platforms for technological innovation, cultural exchange and enhanced public life.

The event was organized by the Shanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association, with support from its UK chapter and Jing'an district chapter.
