The volume of electricity used for charging new energy vehicles (NEVs) on China's highways surged 52.8 percent year-on-year during the May Day holiday, according to the National Energy Administration.

From May 1 to May 5, NEVs were charged a total of 3.97 million times at highway charging stations, while total electricity consumption reached 94.93 million kilowatt-hours (kWh), the administration stated.

The daily average charging volume during the five-day holiday stood at 18.98 million kWh, which was 2.34 times the average level recorded on normal working days so far this year.

The administration has stated that it intends to advance the upgrading and transformation of highway charging facilities in order to provide the public with more convenient and high-quality power replenishment support for holiday travel.
