The 2026 Qintong Boat Festival kicked off in grand style on April 6 at Qinhu National Wetland Park in Jiangyan district, Taizhou. Hailed as the world's largest waterborne temple fair, the festival lived up to its reputation, with over 500 boats and thousands of rowers wielding long bamboo poles and paddles moving across the lake.

As a boat performance began, seven tribute boats glided past the grandstand, each bearing a distinct theme. 

The lead boat, adorned with the festival's slogan "Wellness City, Vibrant Jiangyan", captured immediate attention. It was followed by a zodiac boat inspired by the Year of the Horse, symbolizing ambition. Four blessing boats also stood out, conveying hopes for health, love, and academic and career success. A final ceremonial boat symbolized a desire for peace and wellness.

Then the competitive boat races electrified the crowd. A total of 20 rowing boats, 68 pole-driven boats, and 27 dragon boats charged across the water in waves, stirring up fierce rivalries.

This year's lineup was more diverse than ever, featuring teams from local townships, state-owned enterprises, universities across provinces, and even international participants, showcasing the festival's growing appeal among younger generations and around the world.

Onshore, a medley of folk performances took the stage, including the dynamic Yingge dance, a national intangible cultural heritage from southern China, highlighting the diversity and vitality of traditional Chinese culture.

Originating in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), the Qintong Boat Festival was a ceremony to commemorate fallen soldiers around Qingming Festival. Over time, it has evolved into a folk custom of this water town. Now a signature event held by Jiangyan district, it has promoted local culture and boosted the tourism industry.
