State Grid Jiangxi Electric Power launches 'Migratory Bird Lifeline'
Ahead of International Bird Day, State Grid Jiangxi Electric Power Co Ltd has launched its "Migratory Bird Lifeline" public welfare initiative across a number of areas, including the Poyang Lake region. The initiative aims to strike a balance between "power grid security" and "bird habitat protection".
Volunteers have recorded three active nests in nesting, hatching, and brooding stages near the 500kV Poyang-Zhangshu No 1 Transmission Line — the rescue and nesting site of the oriental white stork "Ta Sheng" — with four eggs observed in the nest on Tower 46. To minimize human disturbance and lower the risk of bird-related power outages, the company is installing anti-bird-dropping baffles on 500kV transmission towers where oriental white storks frequently nest. A total of 6,941 baffles are scheduled for installation in the first half of the year. To date, 1,049 have been completed, with full installation expected by the end of May.
In Nanchang, staff members from Jinxian County Power Supply Company spotted signs of an oriental white stork nest during routine inspections of the 110kV Meihong Line. As a result, they launched monitoring and protection efforts with relevant authorities, and distributed educational materials to local residents. Yongxiu county lies on a critical migratory corridor for birds. The local power supply company has adopted a three-dimensional inspection model combining drones and manual patrols to carry out special spring bird-protection inspections on power lines surrounding wetland areas.
In recent years, State Grid Jiangxi Electric Power has established the public welfare brand "Guardianship Around Poyang Lake–Migratory Bird Lifeline" and developed a comprehensive working system featuring "technology empowerment, precise prevention and control, and ecological coordination".
The company is working with nature reserve administrations, meteorological bureaus and forestry research academies to build an integrated bird monitoring network. It has independently developed a big data platform for ecological bird protection and issued bird activity forecasts. Pilot programs featuring artificial bird nests have been launched in Poyang, Fengcheng and other regions to provide safe habitats for rare birds.
So far, the program has protected 17 oriental white stork broods during nesting and hatching, safeguarded 48 fledglings, and rescued four oriental white storks.
State Grid Jiangxi Electric Power says it intends to double down on its bird protection and grid safety operations to support Jiangxi's role as a demonstration zone for the Beautiful China initiative.
