Countries now pursuing protectionism are often those that once championed free markets, according to Dawisson Belem Lopes, a professor of international and comparative politics at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Lopes said that protectionism is unsustainable, hinders global development, and that, as China has demonstrated, adhering to free trade and open markets is the right path.
