China expressed opposition on Thursday to any form of unilateral tariff measures and blasted the so-called overcapacity as a "pseudo-proposition".

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun made the remarks following two new trade investigations announced by the United States to 16 key trading partners including China.

The probes are being conducted under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 and could lead to new tariffs.

Tariff and trade wars serve no one's interests, Guo stressed, calling on both sides to resolve disputes through consultation on the basis of equality, respect, and mutual benefit.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also pointed to China's leading EV maker, BYD, expanding abroad despite excess domestic capacity, citing sectors such as automobiles and semiconductors as examples of global overcapacity.

China opposes using the so-called overcapacity as a pretext for political manipulation, Guo said.
