Veolia's GreenUp Program aims to support China for a greener future
For over three decades, Veolia has been rooted in China's economic development and green transition.
From operating essential water, waste and energy services to pioneering hazardous waste treatment and spearheading plastic recycling and renewable energy, the company has shared both the opportunities and the challenges inherent in building a sustainable future.
Today, with about 100 operational projects and 350 engineering contracts across more than 40 cities nationwide, Veolia, which is supported by 8,000 employees, stands as a partner in China's environmental development and green transformation.
The three pillars of the company's GreenUp Strategic Program — decarbonization, depollution and resource regeneration — echo China's pursuit of its dual carbon goals, which are peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060, and the green development targets outlined in the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30).
Furthermore, as China advances new quality productive forces, emphasizing innovation, digitalization and green transformation as engines of future growth, Veolia is at the forefront of this shift.
The company is leveraging cutting-edge technologies, such as the Waterl'Ogic digital system deployed in Shanghai, which cuts leakage and carbon emissions.
Its investments in areas such as advanced plastic recycling in Huzhou, Zhejiang province — one of the company's most significant projects in Asia — demonstrate that resource regeneration is a core component of this new, sustainable economic model.
"We are continuing to explore new frontiers, including carbon capture, utilization and storage solutions and biogas-to-green methanol production, to support China in meeting the ambitious climate targets," said a corporate spokesperson.
Facing the challenge of new emerging pollutants such as per — and polyfluoroalkyl substances, Veolia is dedicated to working with relevant Chinese stakeholders to bring innovative solutions to the Chinese market.
"We are also seeking opportunities to scale successful innovations and artificial intelligence applications developed here for broader global deployment," the spokesperson noted.
Moreover, Veolia is committed to deepening its collaborations. The company's China strategy is comprehensive and agile, built on harnessing the unique strengths of various partners.
Veolia will enhance collaboration with Chinese companies and partners, who play a critical role in infrastructure and green transformation, integrating its global expertise with their on-the-ground experiences.
"We will also continue to partner with a wider range of stakeholders like academic institutions to codevelop the next generation of environmental technologies," the spokesperson added.
China remains an indispensable market for Veolia globally. The company is embracing the country's green transition for decades to come, working together to secure a more resilient, depolluted, low-carbon future and a more ecologically sustainable world for all.
