China Huaneng Group, the operator of the world's largest coal-fired carbon capture project, announced on Thursday that the facility has successfully completed a 72-hour trial run, and is now officially operational.

Located at the Huaneng Gansu Zhengning power plant, the project, for which the technology and equipment are entirely domestically produced, is designed to capture 1.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

The project captures carbon dioxide from the desulfurized flue gas of the No 1 generating unit at the Zhengning power plant, with a capture rate exceeding 90 percent and a carbon dioxide purity of over 99 percent.

The captured carbon dioxide will be used for geological storage, enhanced oil recovery, green fuel synthesis, and mineralized building materials, the company said.

The successful launch marks a new stage in the industrial-scale demonstration and application of carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology in China, it said.

The company believes the project will facilitate large-scale, industrial, and deep emission reductions in coal-fired power generation, contributing to China's "dual carbon" goals.
