Shanghai has announced special lighting plans for the New Year's Eve and New Year's Day holiday period, in a bid to create a joyful and auspicious atmosphere for ringing in the New Year.

From Tuesday to Wednesday, the Bund riverfront, Lujiazui, North Bund area and other core areas will be illuminated with colored lights and dynamic lighting effects. Buildings on the Bund and along the Huangpu River will be accented by lights cascading down the embankments like waterfalls.

Other key zones also set to be illuminated by festive lights include the Suzhou Creek river walk, major commercial districts, areas along Shanghai's major elevated roads and landmark structures like the Nanpu Bridge.

However, the city's Huangpu River light and multimedia shows at prime locations like the Bund, North Bund and Lujiazui will not take place on New Year's Eve. No official countdown lighting events are planned either.

Instead, major riverside buildings including the Shanghai Tower, Aurora Plaza and the Museum of Art Pudong will screen festive New Year video promotions across their media facade displays.

The celebratory landscape lighting schedule is as follows:

Core areas (Bund, North Bund, Lujiazui):

Dec 31, 2024: 6 pm — 12:15 am (extended 2 hours 15 mins)

Jan 1, 2025: 6 pm — 11 pm (extended 1 hour)

Suzhou Creek riverside, major commercial districts, major elevated roads:

Dec 31, 2024 — Jan 1, 2025: 6 pm — 10:30 pm (extended 1 hour)

Key landmarks and buildings:
