A 12,000-square-meter area of land on Shanghai's Chongming Island has been transformed dramatically by Xiong Feng into a farm with a rice field, a lotus pond, pavilions, boathouses, docks and secluded corners where visitors can spend their leisure time close to nature. [Photo provided to China Daily]

But as passionate as he is about sustainable living, Xiong concedes that the journey can often be frustrating as nature has its own agenda.

"You are never the boss," he says, laughing. "Mother Nature is."

He recalls that the process of building the roof of the "field theater" was particularly challenging as the wind kept blowing the bamboo pieces out of place. But this incident also proved to be a source of inspiration as he managed to create a new roofing pattern, based on how the bamboo pieces were dispersed by the wind.
